I bought this hood only to protect the lens.A Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 SLR Lens is a very easy damage thing when the barrel is extended.Although I am very careful with my things, the lens came twice in the past. First time withing the term covered by warranty and second time I had to pay $95 to Canon for repair.The hood is much cheaper than and protects the telescopic part of the lens is very good..
